BUYNG AN ENGAGEMENT RING/DIAMOND

First agree a budget that you are comfortable with.  Select one or two designs to develop.  Many customers want a copy of a ring they have seen in another shop, or something to match their existing Jewellery.  Or perhaps there is a design theme in your family?  We can then do variations in the design, including the colour of the gold.  We will help you find inspiration for the design – Jewellery is our passion!

Aesthetics must be balanced with good construction.  We will make the ring comfortable to wear (no sharp edges or wrong sizes), at the same time, it is important that the diamond setting is robust.  We will check the stone setting for you, every few years, free of charge.

If you want to make it a surprise, we can help you with the selection, design and sizing. We have done this for many customers, so they are able to make the ring a surprise for their fiancée.

“Do”

  • Do take time to understand the 4 Cs (Carat, Cut, Clarity, Colour)

  • Do get a valuation certificate (we will provide this free of charge, if you purchase your engagement ring from Liss Fine Gems)

  • Each gemstone is actually unique, and together with our valuation certificate, this will be important for insurance.  Liss Fine Gems will provide you with GIA (Gemological Institute of America), or advise you on equivalent certificates.

  • Do remember that we can always change and “upgrade” a diamond, when you have more financial liquidity.  It is important initially to be comfortable with your budget.

  • Do have the ring engraved with names, initials, a romantic poem and/or a date. We include Laser engraving in our prices.

“Don’t”

  • If you want a 1 Carat, ensure that it is 1.01 or greater and not 0.99 Carat.  Being just slightly underweight will lower the future valuation.

  • Do not worry about fingers getting slimmer or fatter.  We can advise, and even enlarge rings in our workshop.

BUYING PEARLS

We can explain to you the difference between Akoya, Tahitian, South Sea and Fresh Water.

We advise hand knotting so that you can be sure the pearls are matched in terms of colour, luster, size and quality and type.

SELLING GOLD

Please check the daily price and decide if you want to sell for cash, or to re-use your gold in creating some new Jewellery.  We will advise whether your gold is 9, 14, 18, 22 or 24 Carat and offer you a market price. We can provide a quote if you visit our shop in Angermund.

DESIGNING JEWELLERY AND USING COLOURED GEMSTONES

One of specialities and passion is using coloured gemstones.  In general, coloured gemstones are far cheaper than diamonds. We have a good stock, and can also source from local dealers. Many fine gemstones are cut in Idar-Oberstein in Germany.  We can show you a selection of real gemstones to choose from, and advise you on price, colour, hardness and cut.
